Capturing Process Behavior with Log-Based Process Metrics
نویسندگان
چکیده
Currently, process mining literature is primarily focused on the discovery of comprehensible process models that best capture the underlying behavior in event logs. Consequently, the resulting models a) aggregate information, based on algorithm-specific assumptions, and b) transform information into a simplified representation. Both characteristics, which are valuable in certain, different contexts, suffer from the inability to describe objectively the behavior that is inherent to the event log at hand. In this paper, we present the need for logbased process metrics to capture the process behavior in an event log, without the need to first discover a model. The metrics provide a process owner with unbiased, algorithm-agnostic information of the event log, as a starting point of the process analysis. The constructed metrics also serve as a mean to objectively compare different event logs in terms of time-related and variance aspects.

On the Role of Fitness, Precision, Generalization and Simplicity in Process Discovery
Process discovery algorithms typically aim at discovering process models from event logs that best describe the recorded behavior. Often, the quality of a process discovery algorithm is measured by quantifying to what extent the resulting model can reproduce the behavior in the log, i.e. replay fitness. At the same time, there are many other metrics that compare a model with recorded behavior i...
متن کاملAvoiding Over-Fitting in ILP-Based Process Discovery
The aim of process discovery is to discover a process model based on business process execution data, recorded in an event log. One of several existing process discovery techniques is the ILP-based process discovery algorithm. The algorithm is able to unravel complex process structures and provides formal guarantees w.r.t. the model discovered, e.g., the algorithm guarantees that a discovered m...
متن کاملThe implications of piecewise linear process of normal accruals
The present study investigates whether the basic assumption in the Jones model, which normal accruals are a linear function of change in sales, is empirically valid. It also discusses and addresses the implications of the assumption violation in the earnings management detection tests. The research employs a sample of 2832 observations of the annual information of firms listed in Tehran Stock E...
متن کاملInvestigation of Rangeland Changes Based on Landscape Metrics Analysis (Case Study: Kezab Rangelands, Yazd Province, Iran)
Adverse changes in rangeland vegetation can be considered as one of the criteria for land degradation. Some of these changes can be evaluated through monitoring the spatial changes of landscape parameters. This study aimed to investigate the landscape changes in Kezab rangelands of Yazd province, central Iran. Landsat satellite images of 1990, 2002, and 2013, and landscape metrics including Tot...
متن کاملDiscrete Element Modeling of Dynamic Compaction with Different Tamping Condition
Dynamic Compaction (DC) is a common deep compaction method that is usually used for densification of coarse-grained soils. Although traditional continuum-based models such as the Finite Element Method can be successfully applied for assessment of stress distributions or deformations induced by DC, they are typically not adequate for capturing the grain scale mechanisms of soil behavior under im...
